Debt and Finance Post-Covid series
After more than 8 hours of formidable exchange of views and ideas, and having hosted 22 speakers from different countries, the Debt and Finance Post-Covid series, organized by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) and the Institute for Global Law, Economics and Finance of Queen Mary University of London, have assessed different angles and possible options going forward.
Rodrigo Olivares-Caminal, Chair in Banking and Finance at Queen Mary, and Juana Pulgar, Chair in Commercial Law at UCM, were the organisers of these series. The sessions were run in collaboration with the leading Spanish law firms, Cuatrecasas, Garrigues, Gómez-Acebo & Pombo, Blas A. González, Kepler-Karst, and Uría Menendez. Moreover, these sessions were supported by the School of Legal Practice at the UCM, and Global Restructuring Review was the media partner.
The sessions gathered experts mostly on reorganization, restructuring and insolvency matters, and took place in the shadows of the recent European Directive on Preventive Restructuring Frameworks (EU Directive 2019/1023), the emergency reforms prompted by the pandemic and the fear of a possible over-indebtedness crisis resulting from the efforts to mitigate the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Building on this back draw, the main themes covered where the economic and business situation in Spain and beyond, the emergency reforms adopted to overcome the crisis, the advent of digitalization and the need to continue this path, the impact that the economic crisis of companies may have on the financial system because of the risk of an increase in non-performing loans and the need for simplified insolvency procedures for SMEs.
Planned as a monthly discussion co-hosted by the UCM and Queen Mary, these seminars provided a platform for an informal and flexible but candid discussion, where people could bring current challenges and problems, particularly in the areas under the umbrella of financial distress and have an open discussion among experts in a relaxed and friendly environment.
